At an unprecedented child abuse summit in Vatican City Sunday, Pope Francis called pedophile priests \”tools of Satan.\”
两天后，“撒旦的工具”迎来了它的新成员，并且是目前为止级别最高的成员——梵蒂冈经济秘书处处长、教皇方济各前高级顾问乔治·佩尔。
Two days later, \”tools of Satan\” welcomed its latest, and by far its highest-ranking member — Australian Cardinal George Pell, one of the most powerful men in the Roman Catholic Church.

The 77-year-old Australian, once among Pope Francis’ closest advisers, has been found guilty of multiple sexual offenses against children, becoming the most senior Catholic cleric ever to receive such a conviction.

去年12月，佩尔被指控曾于上世纪90年代以大主教的身份，在墨尔本圣帕特里克大教堂的圣器收藏室里性侵两名13岁的唱诗班男童。
Last December, a jury found that Pell abused two choirboys in the priest’s sacristy of St. Patrick’s Cathedral in Melbourneone Sunday in the 1990s, when Pell was the city’s archbishop.
The jury convicted him of one charge of sexually penetrating a child under 16, as well as four counts of willfully committing an indecent act on another under 16.
由于法院下达禁止报道令，媒体一直被禁止报道此事，直至佩尔被定罪。

It was only reported now because the court had issued a suppression order forbidding publication of any details about the trial for legal reasons.
Pell is now facing up to 50 years in prison.

One of the molested choirboys testified on court after keeping his abuse secret for decades, having experienced years of \”shame, loneliness, depression and struggle.\”

The other boy died of heroine overdose in 2014, without divulging the crime and having told his mother he had not been abused.
而已被定罪的佩尔，对这五项指控均不认罪。他的律师已对判决提出上诉，如果上诉成功，可能会导致案件重审。
Pell denied all accusations, with his defense team announcing Tuesday that it had appealed his conviction.
“迟来的正义非正义”
\”Justice delayed is justice denied\”
对于澳大利亚教会性侵案的受害者们而言，这场正义的判决来得实在太晚了。
2013年，时任澳大利亚总理的吉拉德专门成立了一个调查儿童性侵案的皇家调查委员会，对全国范围内包括天主教会、宗教团体、体育团体、学校在内的各个非盈利机构做了一次大范围的深入调查。
In 2013, the then Australia Prime Minister Julia Gillard established a royal Commission to investigate child sexual abuse in Australia amid claims of abuse in the Catholic Church.
彼时，还是罗马教廷主教部成员之一的佩尔在一场新闻发布会上指责媒体，称媒体对教会的性侵报道是一场针对天主教会的“持续运动”：

George Pell, who was at the time a member of the Congregation for Bishops, accused the media of a \”persistent press campaign\” against the Catholic Church.
\”(Although) there is a press campaign focused largely on us, it does not mean that we are largely the principal culprits,\” he told reporters.

In December 2017, the Commission, having spent five years hearing more than 8,000 testimonies from victims of abuse, released a final report that brought the whole nation into disgrace.

The report found 7% of the nation’s Catholic priests allegedly abused children between 1950 to 2010;

1,880 Catholic leaders were subject to allegations of abuse in over 1,000 Catholic institutions across the country between 1980 to 2015;

The average age of the victims when first abused was 10.5 for girls and 11.5 for boys;
而受害者的上诉之路却漫长而艰难，从报案的平均时间来看，每起性侵事件的报告时间为33年；
And the average time for the survivors to disclose the abuse was 33 years；
尽管调查委员会的调查对象包括学校和体育团体等非宗教机构，但调查结果显示，60%的受害幸存者来自宗教机构，而其中的三分之二来自天主教教会。
While the Commission also investigated abuse at educational institutions, sporting organizations and state institutions, it found around 60% of abuse were from religious institutions. And out of those, nearly two-thirds were from the Catholic Church.
仅仅是澳大利亚吗？
Unfortunately, this is not just about Australia.
过去几十年里，世界范围内的天主教教会都面临着雪崩式的儿童性侵指控。
Over the past few decades, Catholic churches worldwide have faced an avalanche of charges of child sexual abuse.
去年8月，美国宾夕法尼亚州最高法院发布长达884页的大陪审团报告，揭露惊人丑闻：在过去的70年间，有超过300名天主教神职人员性侵、甚至强奸未成年儿童，共造成超1,000名儿童受害者。
报告还指出，教会在事发后选择了系统性地掩盖真相。
Last August, The Pennsylvania Supreme Court has released a grand jury report revealing how over 1,000 children were sexually abused by members of six dioceses in the state for the last 70 years, and how the churches systematically covered up the rape and molestation.
一个月后，德国《明镜周刊》披露：调查人员在参考了德国全国范围内的27个教区的3.8万份文件后发现，自上世纪40年代至今，共计有3,677名儿童遭到约1,670名神职人员性侵。
而据报告撰写人表示，有些纪录已被销毁或篡改。因此，实际上的神职人员性侵儿童个案的数量可能更多。
One month later, German outlet Der Spiegel reported that a study commissioned by the Catholic Church in Germany found some 1,670 priests across the nation committed sexual abuses on as many as 3,677 minors since 1946.
The true number may never be made known as some records have already been “destroyed or manipulated” over the time.
And the list goes on.

Last October, Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison delivered an emotional apology to victims and survivors of child sexual abuse on behalf of the nation in Canberra.
由国家总理亲自道歉在澳大利亚历史上并不多见，此举通常是为回应那些影响极其恶劣、且政府扮演了不光彩角色的国家性事件。澳大利亚上一次致“国家道歉”是在2008年，时任总理陆克文向该国被称为“被偷走的一代”的原住民群体致歉。

It has been 10 years since Australian leaders took to the national stage to employ a public apology and acknowledge the country’s wrongdoings – last time was in 2008, when the then Prime Minister Kevin Rudd apologized nationwide to the mistreatment of Australia’s Indigenous population which resulted in what is known as the \”Stolen Generation.\”
