With a growing student body, the University of Nebraska-Lincoln College of Architecture reached a critical juncture: it needed to expand its facilities but faced a choice to either demolish existing structures or build upon its historic complex of three interconnected buildings. Architecture Hall, constructed in 1891, was followed by the Law College in 1921, and then in 1985, the “Link” Building was added to unify the complex –introducing elevators, fire stairs, and a central lobby. Despite its large footprint, the Link contributed little else to the urban ensemble.

The new addition strategically leverages this underutilized infrastructure to preserve the integrity of the historic complex, while introducing flexible studio and critique spaces and restoring its historic auditorium. It also redefines the College’s presence on campus with a new front façade and entrance —a symbol of the design hub.

An ambitious timeline necessitated an accelerated delivery model, with no means to adopt formal LEED certification. Despite this challenge, the University was committed to making a few critical decisions that would place the project on the sustainable spectrum. Our proposal embraced prefabricated mass timber construction, positioning the building itself as a pedagogical tool for its audience. The structure is composed almost entirely of wood, with beams and columns fabricated from glue-lam members and floor slabs from cross-laminated timber (CLT). Fabricated off-site and installed in under a month, each floor was erected in just one week.

This economy and didactic ethos extended into our finish choices, exposing raw materials opportunistically to eliminate redundant trades, enhance daylighting, and reveal the building’s organs as teaching elements. By adopting fiber-reinforced polymer panels (Kalwall) for the north façade, we utilized a single-source for the installation of an all-in-one exterior wall system, minimizing glazed openings for key views while maximizing diffuse and indirect light ideal for studio work.

Situated at the western edge of the UNL campus, the College of Architecture plays a transformative role in three key site relationships. First, as part of the weekly promenade between parking lots and the football stadium, the building acts as both a campus threshold and an outpost during gameday tailgating activities. Second, as a gateway into campus, the north allée links the east-west campus axis directly to the historic Sheldon Museum of Art, designed by Philip Johnson. The raked fenestration of the north façade intentionally orients framed views toward these two event destinations. Third, the north façade serves as the new main entrance for the College of Architecture, unifying the complex into a cohesive whole.
